Tom Hartman Sr. has always had racing in his blood. He started racing outboard hydroplanes at age 14. He then advanced to a 1955 Chevy in 1963 that he ran in “E” modified production. He was beat only once in five years, the car was sold in 1969.
Tom bought a 1972 Blazer that was only nine months old in 1973 It had only seen the first four winters. He raced on the flats in the Silver Lake Sand dunes until West Michigan Sand Dragway opened in 1983 and the rest is history. He builds his own motors as well as others at the track. His current combination is a potent alcohol injected small block that pushes the Blazer into the 4.2-4.3 second range.
He has raced all over the country as far away as California. He has won FOUR championships at West Michigan Sand Dragway. Over the years his family has always played a big role in his success. His wife Marlene being his biggest supporter. His son Tom Jr. and grandson Tanner compete as well. That makes three generations of winning Hartman racing!
Tom Hartman has inspired so many young and old racers alike. He would give you the shirt off his back if it helped you get down the race track. Tom continues to set an example when it comes to sportsmanship and love of the sport. Between his amazing family and iconic yellow blazer Tom represents the best of what our great sport has to offer!
